IBAN vs RIB: What’s the Difference in France?

If you’ve opened a bank account in France or started working with French clients, you’ve likely heard two terms: IBAN and RIB. They’re both linked to your bank account, but they’re not exactly the same thing.

Understanding the difference will help you know when to use each, especially if you work internationally or within France.

What Is an IBAN?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. It’s the standard format for identifying bank accounts across the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) and in many other countries.

An IBAN includes:

  • A Country code. For example, FR for France, DE for Germany, ES for Spain, IT for Italy, and GB for the United Kingdom.
  • Two check digits for security
  • Your bank code, branch code, and account number

Purpose:
Used for international and domestic transfers within the SEPA network. It ensures your money reaches the correct account quickly and accurately.

If you’re sending or receiving money from abroad or anywhere in Europe, you’ll need the RIB of the person you’re transacting with. The IBAN within that RIB identifies the account and ensures the money is sent or received correctly. In other words, the IBAN is part of the account details, while the RIB is the complete document that allows payments to happen.

What Is a RIB?

RIB stands for Relevé d’Identité Bancaire, which translates to “statement of banking identity.” It’s essentially a document that lists all the key details of your bank account. Your IBAN is part of your RIB — along with other important information needed to send or receive money securely.
A standard RIB includes:

  • Your IBAN, which identifies your specific account
  • Your BIC/SWIFT code, used for international transfers
  • The bank’s name and address

In short, the RIB is the complete document, while the IBAN is one of the essential details within it.

Purpose:
Primarily used in France to share your account details for direct debits, salary deposits, or domestic transfers.

The physical or PDF form is often given to employers, service providers, or landlords when setting up recurring payments.

Feature IBAN RIB
Scope International + domestic Domestic (France-focused)
Format Alphanumeric code Document containing IBAN + BIC/SWIFT + bank info
Use Case Sending/receiving money in SEPA & abroad Sharing details within France for payments or debits
Where Found Printed on RIB, bank statements, online banking Provided by your bank or generated via your account

When to Use Each

  • Use IBAN when sending or receiving SEPA payments across borders or within the SEPA network. You need an EU IBAN to make or accept SEPA transfers, as it ensures your account is recognized across all participating European countries. Unfortunately, some institutions still discriminate against non-local EU IBANs, something that remains a challenge despite SEPA regulations.
  • Use RIB when you need to share your full bank details in France . For example, to receive money, set up direct debits, get your salary paid, or manage recurring payments.

Think of it this way: the IBAN is the number, the RIB is the document that contains the number and other details.

In everyday situations, you’ll often need both. For instance, if a friend wants to send you money or pay you back, they’ll need your RIB, which includes your IBAN. If you’re transferring money online or setting up a payment to someone in another European country, you’ll use their IBAN and RIB to make sure the funds go to the right account. Even employers use this information to send your salary directly to your account.
